Historical Context
Paul was re-arrested under Nero's persecution of Christians (c. AD 64-68). Unlike his first imprisonment, he is now in a cold cell (4:13), abandoned by many (1:15), and awaiting trial that will likely end in death. Only Luke remains with him.
