Authorship
The Apostle Paul, written from prison alongside Ephesians. Paul had not personally founded the Colossian church (1:7) - it was planted by Epaphras - but wrote when a Colossian heresy threatening the supremacy of Christ required urgent response.
Historical Context
Colossae was a smaller city in Asia Minor. A syncretistic philosophy combining Jewish elements, angel worship, and ascetic practices was threatening to reduce Jesus to one figure among many spiritual powers.
Purpose
To defend the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Christ - he is the fullness of deity in bodily form, the head of every power - against any system that diminishes him.

Colossians 1:15-20 contains one of the most comprehensive Christological statements in the NT: Christ as firstborn over creation and firstborn from the dead.
Colossians 2:9 - The fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form - is one of the clearest statements of the incarnation in Scripture.
Paul warns against hollow and deceptive philosophy (2:8) - the earliest NT warning against syncretistic spirituality.
