12th NT book - Paul's Letters (Prison Letters)

Historical Context

Colossae was a smaller city in Asia Minor. A syncretistic philosophy combining Jewish elements, angel worship, and ascetic practices was threatening to reduce Jesus to one figure among many spiritual powers.

Purpose

To defend the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Christ - he is the fullness of deity in bodily form, the head of every power - against any system that diminishes him.

Key Message

Christ is all - the creator, sustainer, and redeemer of everything - and in him you have been made complete; nothing may be added to him.
