New Testament John Ch. 13-17

Book Segment

Farewell Discourse

Jesus' final teachings to His disciples, including the promise of the Holy Spirit

Love Service Holy Spirit Prayer

Background

John 13-17 is the Upper Room Discourse — the longest continuous teaching in the Gospels, with no parallel in the Synoptics. The evening opens with the foot-washing (the incarnate Lord kneeling as servant), Jesus's announcement of Judas's betrayal, Peter's confidence and predicted denial, and then the extended farewell discourse (14-16) about the coming Holy Spirit, the True Vine, the world's hatred, and the Spirit as Counselor/Paraclete. Chapter 17 is the High Priestly Prayer — the most extended prayer of Jesus recorded in Scripture.

Story Plot

The Foot Washing

John 13:14-15

Jesus pours water into a basin and washes His disciples' feet — the act of the lowest household servant performed by the Master. 'I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.'

Significance: Service and humility are demonstrated, not merely commanded — the Teacher performs the lowest act to establish the highest standard.

I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life

John 14:6

Thomas asks 'how can we know the way?' — Jesus replies with the most exclusive claim in the NT: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

Significance: Three dimensions of exclusive claim: epistemological (truth), soteriological (way), and ontological (life) — all concentrated in His person.

The High Priestly Prayer (John 17)

John 17:21

Jesus prays for Himself (glorification), for His disciples (protection and sanctification), and for all future believers (unity) — 'that all of them may be one... as we are one.'

Significance: Christian unity is not organizational merger but the reflection of Trinitarian unity — Jesus's prayer for us establishes the standard.

The Paraclete / Holy Spirit

Another Counselor

Jesus promises another Paraclete (Counselor, Advocate, Helper) — One like Jesus Himself who will be with the disciples forever, teach them all things, and bear witness to Christ.

Personality: Invisible but present, convicting and comforting, glorifying Christ
Motivations: To complete what Jesus began — guiding the disciples into all truth
Transformation: His coming transforms the scattered disciples into the bold witnesses of Acts
Legacy: The Paraclete promise grounds all pneumatology — the Spirit's person and role are defined more clearly here than anywhere else in Scripture

Theological Themes

The Holy Spirit as Paraclete

John 14-16 provides the most extensive NT teaching on the Holy Spirit's person and role — Counselor, Advocate, Spirit of Truth who glorifies Christ.

When the Counselor comes... he will testify about me (John 15:26).

Life Lessons

1

The foot-washing's establishment of servant-greatness makes every opportunity to serve others an opportunity to model Christ's own character.

2

Abiding in Christ (John 15) is not a technique but a relationship — fruit flows from connection, not from productivity strategies.

3

The Holy Spirit's role as 'another Counselor' like Jesus Himself establishes that we are not orphaned after Christ's ascension.

4

Jesus's prayer for unity (John 17:21) makes Christian division a counter-witness to the very thing He asked the Father to accomplish.

Modern Applications

1

The foot-washing is literally practiced in many traditions (Maundy Thursday) as a physical participation in Jesus's servant-model.

2

John 14:6's exclusive claim ('no one comes to the Father except through me') is the central text in contemporary pluralism debates.

3

The True Vine's 'apart from me you can do nothing' provides the theological foundation for every spiritual formation practice that emphasizes connection over performance.

4

Jesus's prayer for unity (John 17) is used as the foundational text for ecumenical dialogue and is the basis for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

A Prayer for Reflection

Heavenly Father, as we reflect on Farewell Discourse in John, open our hearts to receive the truth You have embedded in these chapters. Help us to see not merely historical events but Your living word speaking to our present reality. Where we are confused, bring clarity; where we are discouraged, bring hope; where we are proud, bring humility. May the lessons of Farewell Discourse take root in us and bear fruit in how we love You and serve others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
