About the Book
IntroTo show God's sovereign orchestration of seemingly secular political processes to accomplish his redemptive purposes - and to model prayerful, courageous, practical leadership in the face of opposition.
Nehemiah's Vision and the Walls Rebuilt
Ch. 1-6Nehemiah hears of Jerusalem's broken walls, prays and fasts, gains the king's permission, surveys the city by night, and leads an extraordinary communal rebuilding project despite intense opposition.
The wall's rebuilding is a physical expression of spiritual restoration — the community that prays together, works together, and faces opposition together experiences what only God can build.
Covenant Renewal and Community Reform
Ch. 7-13Ezra reads the Law publicly; the community confesses its history of sin and signs a covenant; the city is populated, the walls dedicated, and Nehemiah returns for a final round of reforms.
The public reading and communal reception of Scripture is the foundation of all genuine reform; Nehemiah's final chapter is an honest account of the difficulty of sustaining renewal.
