Today's Story

Margaret had written New Year's resolutions every January 1st for thirty-seven years — and broken most of them before February. Lose weight, read more, worry less. Each year the list grew longer; each year her heart grew heavier. Then one January morning, after a difficult year of illness and loss, she picked up her worn Bible and read Lamentations 3:22-23. She wept. Not from sadness, but from relief. God's mercies were new that very morning — not because she had earned them or resolved to do better, but simply because His love was inexhaustible. She put down her resolution list and wrote instead three words in her journal: He is faithful. That year, for the first time, she felt free.

Reflection

We greet each new year with hope and good intentions, but there is a deeper invitation at the threshold of January: to receive what we cannot manufacture. Lamentations was written in the aftermath of Jerusalem's destruction — a ruined city, a shattered people, a poet sitting in ashes. Yet even there, the author lifts his eyes to something that grief cannot destroy: the steadfast love of the Lord. The Hebrew word translated 'compassions' (rachamim) comes from the root for 'womb' — it speaks of a mother's tender, visceral love for her child. God's love for us is not polite or distant. It is warm and fierce and personal, renewed every single morning. You don't need to manufacture a better version of yourself today. The same God who met you in last year's pain, failures, and surprises is ready to meet you again — this morning, in this moment, with mercies that are entirely new.

Lord, I bring You my tired resolutions and my heavy history. Teach me to receive Your new mercies instead of straining for my own improvements. Let today be a real beginning — not because I am different, but because You are faithful. Amen.
