Still Waters
"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."
— Psalm 23:2-3
Today's Story
Elena worked night shifts in a crowded hospital ICU. Between the beeping machines and urgent calls, she barely had time to breathe. A colleague noticed she seemed depleted and handed her a small card with Psalm 23 written on it. 'Read it on your break,' she said. That night, sitting in a fluorescent break room surrounded by noise, Elena read it slowly. She closed her eyes and pictured still water. She wasn't in the pasture — she was still in the chaos — but something shifted. She began reading the psalm on every break for months. Slowly, she discovered that the still water wasn't a place she had to reach; it was a presence that could meet her where she stood.
Reflection
The twenty-third psalm uses the image of a shepherd who knows exactly what his sheep need — not driving them forward relentlessly, but making them lie down. The word 'makes' is interesting. Sometimes God brings us to rest by removing our ability to push forward. Illness, exhaustion, forced sabbath. The green pastures and quiet waters are not a reward for the spiritually productive; they are a gift for the depleted. The shepherd leads, but also refreshes — the Hebrew word nephesh, translated 'soul,' means the whole self, the life breath. God is not interested in managing our performance; He is interested in restoring our whole person. Wherever you find yourself today — in noise, in grief, in the ordinary rush — the Shepherd has not forgotten you. He is leading you, step by step, toward the water you need.
Today's Prayer
Shepherd of my soul, lead me today beside the waters I cannot always see. When I am driven by urgency, make me lie down. Refresh the parts of me that have grown dry and weary. I trust You to know what I need. Amen.
