The Long Road
"We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
— Romans 5:3-4
Today's Story
William Wilberforce entered the British Parliament in 1780 with a brilliant mind and no particular purpose. A few years later, a transformative faith encounter changed everything. He took on the cause of abolishing the slave trade — and lost. Again and again, year after year, for two decades, his bills were defeated, his health declined, and friends urged him to quit. He kept going. In 1807, Parliament finally passed the Slave Trade Act. He did not live to see the final abolition of slavery in 1833 — that news arrived three days before his death. His suffering produced perseverance, his perseverance produced character, and his character produced hope that outlasted his own life.
Reflection
Paul's chain in Romans 5 runs counter to everything we naturally desire. We want blessing to produce joy, not suffering. But Paul insists on a different arithmetic: suffering → perseverance → character → hope. And crucially, he says we 'glory' in suffering — not because it feels good, but because we know what it produces. The word for 'perseverance' is hupomone — to remain under, to endure without running away. It is not passive resignation but active, rooted staying power. Character (dokime) means tested and approved — the kind of person who has been through the fire and found God faithful there. And hope — not optimism, but confident expectation in what God has promised — is the result. Your difficulty today is not random. In God's hands it is becoming something. Stay under it a little longer.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I do not always understand why the road is long. But I trust You with the journey. Give me perseverance today — not to endure alone, but to remain close to You in the difficulty. Let suffering shape me into someone who carries genuine hope. Amen.
