Courage Over Fear

When Fear Knocks

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

— Isaiah 41:10

Today's Story

Sarah received a cancer diagnosis on a Tuesday morning in March. She described the hours after the doctor's call as a kind of tunnel — everything narrowed to the single terrible fact. That evening, her pastor read Isaiah 41:10 at a prayer gathering, and she felt something shift. Not that the cancer disappeared or the fear evaporated — but that the fear was suddenly not alone in the room. The presence the verse described became tangible. She began writing the verse on sticky notes and putting them on mirrors, dashboards, and cabinet doors. Over the following months of treatment, those four Hebrew words — 'I am with you' — became her constant reality. She is healthy now. She still has one note on her bathroom mirror.

Reflection

The Hebrew of Isaiah 41:10 is dense with divine action: I am with you. I am your God. I will strengthen. I will help. I will uphold. God is the grammatical subject of every clause — doing, not observing. The verb 'uphold' (tamak) means to grab hold of, as one grabs a hand to prevent a fall. The picture is of God's hand closing around ours — firm, present, preventing the fall. Fear is not forbidden. It is a natural human response to real danger. But God's word to us in fear is not 'stop being afraid' — it is 'I am here.' The antidote to fear is not courage summoned from within; it is presence received from without. God's presence is the ground of courage. In whatever you are facing today, He is present. He has taken hold of your hand.

Today's Prayer

Father, I bring You my fears by name today. I am afraid of [what the reader faces]. But I choose to believe You are with me — not as a theological statement but as a lived reality. Strengthen me. Uphold me. Be enough for what I cannot face alone. Amen.
