Clothed in Righteousness

"I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness."

— Isaiah 61:10

Today's Story

A young woman named Dana had spent years convinced she was too stained by her past to approach God. She had made choices she was deeply ashamed of and carried the weight of them like physical clothing — heavy, dirty, impossible to remove. A mentor gave her Isaiah 61:10 written on a notecard. 'Read it until you believe it,' she said. Dana read it for weeks, not quite believing. One morning during prayer she had a vivid mental image: standing in filthy rags, and then someone placing a radiant garment over her shoulders. She wept for twenty minutes. 'I finally understood,' she said later, 'that it was not my job to be clean first. He clothes me.'

Reflection

Righteousness in scripture is often pictured as clothing — a covering that changes our standing before God. The remarkable thing about Isaiah 61:10 is who is doing the clothing. Not the speaker. God. The garments are His to give: salvation and righteousness. This pictures what theologians call imputed righteousness — Christ's perfect standing before the Father given to us as a gift, laid over us as a garment. We did not weave it. We did not earn it. We simply received it. The response is delight — not guilt, not continued striving, but deep, settled joy. If you are in Christ, God does not see you in your rags. He sees the robe He gave you. Today you are invited not to work harder to be accepted, but to delight in the acceptance you have already been given.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Father, I receive today what I could never earn: the robe of Your righteousness. When I am tempted to hide in shame or strive for acceptance, remind me that I am already clothed. Let my life be a response of joy to the gift You have given. Amen.
