Thy Kingdom Come

"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

— Matthew 6:10

📖

Today's Story

A social worker named James began every morning by praying 'Thy kingdom come' over his caseload — over the families caught in cycles of poverty and trauma that felt utterly immovable. For months, nothing seemed to change. Then slowly, small things shifted: a landlord extended grace, a child opened up, a family found employment. None of it was dramatic. All of it required being present in unglamorous places for a long time. Years later, James said: 'I realized I had been praying that prayer for my comfort — that God would fix things so my job would be easier. I had to learn to pray it as an invitation for me to participate in the fixing.' The kingdom came, in part, through his slow, faithful, prayer-soaked presence.

Reflection

The Lord's Prayer places 'your kingdom come' before 'give us today our daily bread.' Priorities matter. When we pray 'your kingdom come,' we are asking God to insert His reign into our physical world — into our neighborhoods, workplaces, relationships, and political realities. But we are also surrendering our own agendas. 'Your will be done' does not mean passive resignation; it means active alignment with what God is already doing. N.T. Wright has written that this prayer is not just a petition — it is a commissioning. When you pray it, you are signing up to be the hands and feet of the answer. The kingdom comes in part through people who let the prayer change them before they expect it to change the world.

Today's Prayer

Lord, let Your kingdom come today — in my city, in my home, in my heart. I surrender my agenda to Yours. Use me today as an instrument of Your reign. Amen.
