Rivers in the Desert

Rivers in the Desert
"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."
— Isaiah 43:19
Today's Story
The Negev desert in southern Israel is one of the driest places on earth — ancient, cracked, and apparently lifeless. Yet every few years, rare heavy rains transform it temporarily into a carpet of wildflowers. Seeds that have been dormant for decades spring to life almost overnight. Scientists call it a 'super bloom.' Israeli desert ecologists have documented it, but it still surprises everyone who sees it. The desert was never as dead as it looked. Beneath the surface, waiting for the water, were seeds of extraordinary life. Many people who have passed through spiritual desert seasons report a similar discovery: what felt like death was actually dormancy. When God's rain came, the blooming was sudden and overwhelming.
Reflection
Isaiah 43:19 is addressed to a people in spiritual and national crisis. They knew God had done things in the past — the Exodus was their defining story. But God says: stop only looking backward. Look at what I am doing now. The 'new thing' He describes is a way through wilderness and streams in wasteland — which is to say, provision in the most improbable of places. When everything around us looks like a dead end, God announces that He specializes in dead ends. The way in the wilderness doesn't detour around the hard place — it goes through it. The streams don't appear before you enter the desert — they appear when you are already there. Dry season does not mean God has stopped working. It may mean He is about to do something new.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I am standing in a wilderness right now. I cannot see the way or the stream. But I trust Your promise: You are doing something new, and I may not perceive it yet. Open my eyes. Make a way. Bring water to this dry place. Amen.
