Throw Off the Weight

Throw Off the Weight
"Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."
— Hebrews 12:1
Today's Story
At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, marathon runner John Stephen Akhwari of Tanzania finished last — in the dark, hours after the winner had crossed the finish line, having dislocated his knee in a fall. He hobbled across the finish with bandaged, bloodied legs. A reporter asked why he didn't quit. He answered: 'My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race. They sent me to finish the race.' That response became one of the most quoted lines in Olympic history. He didn't win. He finished. The cloud of witnesses cheered him as loudly as any champion.
Reflection
Hebrews 12:1 opens with 'therefore' — pointing back to chapter 11, the Hall of Faith, the 'cloud of witnesses' who ran before us. The writer's point is that we are not running alone; we are running surrounded by witnesses who have already proven the race is worth running. The instruction is practical: throw off what hinders and the sin that entangles. 'Throw off' is an athletic word — the deliberate removal of extra weight before a race. What in your life is slowing your spiritual stride? Not necessarily sinful things — sometimes legitimate good things are hindering the better thing. The race is not a sprint; it is a marathon that requires pacing, long-term endurance, and the willingness to keep running even when the crowd has gone home.
Today's Prayer
Lord, show me what I need to throw off — the weights and the entanglements that are slowing my stride. Give me a marathon mentality: not sprinting for impressive moments, but persevering day after day for the long finish. Amen.
