Sacrificial Generosity

The Widow's Offering

"They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on."

— Mark 12:44

📖

Today's Story

During a severe drought in Ethiopia, an aid worker distributing food at a distribution point was stopped by an elderly woman who pressed something into her hand. It was a small coin — the last she had until the next distribution. The woman said through a translator: 'I want to give to others, not only receive. I am still alive. I still have something.' The aid worker described weeping — not from sorrow but from the quality of what she had just witnessed. The widow's offering is not just a historical event. It is a theology of generosity that appears in every generation, in the hands of the poorest people on earth.

Reflection

Jesus deliberately stationed Himself opposite the temple treasury and watched. This is significant: He was paying attention to giving in a way the givers did not know. And He noticed not the largest amounts but the most proportional sacrifice. The wealthy gave from what they could easily spare. The widow gave her entire livelihood. Jesus called the disciples over specifically to observe this — to have their categories of significance disrupted. The economy of the kingdom measures differently. By God's arithmetic, the widow's two coins were worth more than all the wealthy gifts combined. This means that the offering most precious to God today may come from the most financially limited person in your community. And it means that generosity is measured not by the amount given but by the amount kept.

Today's Prayer

Lord, free me from the tyranny of calculating what I can comfortably give. Make me a person who gives from the heart, not the surplus. Let my generosity be measured by love, not by ledger. Amen.
