Formed Before Birth
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
— Jeremiah 1:5
Today's Story
A young woman named Priya grew up in a family that had made her feel that her existence was an inconvenience — an unplanned addition to a family that couldn't accommodate her. She carried that story as a fact about herself into adulthood. A friend introduced her to Jeremiah 1:5, and she sat with it for weeks. 'Before I formed you.' Before. Her existence was not an accident in anyone's economy. In God's economy, she had been known and set apart before she had drawn breath. She said: 'The word that changed me was before. My parents didn't plan me. God planned me before my parents were born.'
Reflection
The word God speaks to Jeremiah at his calling is addressed to a specific person but carries universal implications. 'I knew you' (yada) — the same deep, intimate knowing used of God's relationship with His people throughout the Old Testament. 'I set you apart' — consecrated, designated, with a purpose in mind before the life had begun. This is not Jeremiah's exception; it is the pattern of how God creates human life. Psalm 139 expands the same truth: knit together in the womb, fearfully and wonderfully made, known completely before existence. The implications are staggering: you were not a cosmic accident. You were not the result of factors that God had to work with after the fact. You were intended. Known. Set apart. Appointed for a purpose that already existed before you did.
Today's Prayer
Lord, let this be true in the deepest part of me: I was formed with intention. Forgive me for living as though I were accidental. I receive the reality of being known before I was born and called to a purpose I am still discovering. Amen.
