Launch Out Into the Deep

"When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.'"

— Luke 5:4

📖

Today's Story

Peter had fished all night and caught nothing. He was exhausted, discouraged, and cleaning nets when Jesus used his boat as a speaking platform. When the sermon was over, Jesus turned to the experienced fisherman and gave advice that made no professional sense: go back out in the daytime to deep water and cast again. Peter's response is remarkable: 'Because you say so, I will let down the nets.' He obeyed against his expertise, against his exhaustion, against all professional experience. The catch that followed required two boats and nearly sank both. The miracle was not in the deep water; it was in the obedience to the instruction despite every reason to ignore it.

Reflection

Jesus often calls us into the deep — the part of life where our expertise doesn't help us, where our track record doesn't comfort us, where the risk is real and the outcome unknown. Peter's professional knowledge told him to fish at night in shallow water — and that strategy had already failed. Jesus' instruction was counterintuitive by every measure. Yet Peter obeyed 'because you say so.' Not because it made sense. Not because he had a good feeling about it. Because Jesus said so. This is the nature of faith: acting on the word of Jesus rather than the available evidence. The deep water is wherever Jesus is calling you beyond your competence and comfort. What is He asking you to launch into today, against your natural wisdom?

Today's Prayer

Lord, I hear You calling me into the deep. I confess I prefer the shallows where I feel in control. Give me Peter's simple obedience: because You say so, I will let down the nets. Amen.
