Joseph Waiting

Joseph Waiting
"But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews."
— Genesis 40:14-15
Today's Story
Joseph interpreted the cupbearer's dream and made a simple request: remember me. The cupbearer was restored to Pharaoh's service and forgot. Two years passed. Joseph remained in prison. The text doesn't tell us what those two years felt like for Joseph. We can guess. But what we know is this: when Pharaoh had his dream, the cupbearer finally remembered. And the phrase used in Genesis 41:14 — 'Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon' — suggests that when the time came, the timing was precise. Not a day earlier than needed. Not a day later. The delay had prepared the man. The man was ready for the moment.
Reflection
Joseph's story spans thirteen years from the pit to the palace. Thirteen years of waiting — two of which followed a specific request that was ignored. The spiritual question Joseph's story poses is not 'will God eventually act?' but 'what am I becoming during the wait?' Joseph emerges from prison with the character, wisdom, and maturity to govern an empire. The prison that felt like abandonment was, in God's economy, the final preparation for the assignment. Delays are not denials. God's timing is not negligence. The 'quickly' with which Joseph was brought out when the moment came reveals that God had been watching the prison clock all along, waiting for exactly the right moment. Your waiting season is not wasted. It is preparation.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I am Joseph in the waiting — and I am tired. Sustain me in the delay. Let what You are doing in the hidden years prepare me for the public moment. I trust Your timing, even when it feels like forgetfulness. Amen.
