The Road to Emmaus

"Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight."

— Luke 24:31

📖

Today's Story

Two disciples walked the seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus after the crucifixion, discussing everything that had happened. They were devastated. A stranger joined them and walked with them, asking questions, explaining the scriptures. They arrived at Emmaus and invited him in. When he broke the bread, their eyes were opened and they recognized him — and he vanished. They immediately got up and walked back the seven miles to Jerusalem to tell the others: 'Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road?' The burning heart is the clue. Jesus had been with them all along. Recognition came later. The presence was real before the recognition.

Reflection

The Emmaus road story is one of the most resonant resurrection appearances in the Gospels because it is so ordinary: walking, talking, grief, hospitality, a shared meal. Jesus doesn't appear in a blaze of glory; He joins two discouraged travelers on a road and walks with them. He listens to their pain. He explains the scriptures. He reveals Himself in the breaking of bread — which is also a Eucharistic image. The disciples' question afterward — 'Were not our hearts burning within us?' — suggests that the recognition preceded the understanding. They felt it before they knew it. How often does Jesus walk with us in our grief, explaining what we cannot understand, present before we recognize Him? The road you are on today may be an Emmaus road — He is already walking it with you.

Today's Prayer

Jesus, open my eyes to see You walking with me today. Let my heart burn as You speak. Recognize Your presence in the ordinary — in conversation, in scripture, in the breaking of bread. You are here. Amen.
