Remain in Me

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

— John 15:5

📖

Today's Story

A vineyard owner in Napa Valley described the relationship between vine and branch to a visiting student group: 'People think the branch works to produce grapes. It doesn't. It receives from the vine and grapes are the result. The branch's whole job is to stay connected. A branch that disconnects to be more productive kills itself.' He had no idea he was teaching theology. A seminary student in the group later wrote an essay on the comment and gave it to the vineyard owner, who framed it and hung it in his office. The farmer and the theologian had been saying the same thing all along.

Reflection

Jesus' 'I am the vine' discourse is the most sustained metaphor He uses to describe the believer's relationship to Him. The vine provides everything: water, nutrients, structure, support. The branch receives everything: its only contribution is connection. 'Apart from me you can do nothing' — the Greek meden means absolutely nothing, zero. This is shocking to a culture that prizes productivity, self-sufficiency, and hustle. But Jesus is not discouraging effort; He is redirecting its source. All legitimate Christian fruitfulness flows from abiding — from the ongoing, real, interior connection to Christ through prayer, Scripture, and the Spirit. Fruitfulness that comes from other sources produces fruit that doesn't last (verse 16). The question is simple: Are you remaining?

Today's Prayer

Jesus, I want to remain in You — not just visit occasionally. Let my daily life be structured around this connection. Be the vine. Let me be the branch. And let the fruit be Your overflow through me. Amen.
