To the Least of These

To the Least of These
"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'"
— Matthew 25:40
Today's Story
Mother Teresa described her theology of service in one sentence: 'I see Jesus in every human being.' She didn't begin each day with sophisticated social analysis or strategic planning for maximum impact. She bent down to the next person in front of her who was dying in the street. Her Missionaries of Charity have served millions of the poorest people on earth, across hundreds of countries. When asked how she kept going in the face of such overwhelming need, she said: 'We are not called to be successful. We are called to be faithful. And I am always looking at the face of Jesus in the face of the poor.'
Reflection
Matthew 25's judgment scene is one of the most surprising passages in the Gospels. The separation of sheep and goats is not based on doctrine, church attendance, or religious performance — it is based on service to the hungry, the stranger, the sick, the imprisoned. And the most shocking element is the King's identification with the recipients: 'whatever you did for one of the least of these... you did for me.' The reverse is equally sobering: 'whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' Jesus is present in the suffering human face in a way that obligates and transforms ordinary service. You can serve Jesus today without going to church. You just have to feed someone hungry.
Today's Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to see Your face in the faces around me today — the lonely, the struggling, the forgotten. Let my service to them be service to You. Let me not pass by the person You've placed in front of me. Amen.
