Hunger for God's Presence

Show Me Your Glory

"Then Moses said, 'Now show me your glory.'"

— Exodus 33:18

📖

Today's Story

A. W. Tozer described the 'holy hunger' that marks a genuine seeker of God: 'To have found God and still to pursue Him is the soul's paradox of love.' He spent decades in the pursuit of God's manifested presence, writing about it and praying for it. He was known to spend hours in prayer alone — often lying face down in his empty church at night. He described these encounters not as emotional experiences but as qualitatively different from ordinary existence. He said: 'The man who has seen something of the glory of God thinks very little of the world's best. He has tasted something that makes everything else seem thin and flavored.'

Reflection

Moses had spoken with God 'face to face, as a man speaks with a friend' (Exodus 33:11). He had witnessed the burning bush, the Exodus, the parting of the sea, manna from heaven, water from rock. And his request, having experienced all of this, was simply: show me Your glory. The insatiable nature of genuine encounter with God is expressed in Moses' request — the more you encounter God, the more you want of Him. God's response is paradoxical: 'No one can see my face and live.' But He also promises to let His goodness pass before Moses, to proclaim His name. God gives what Moses can receive and covers him through what would destroy him. The hunger for God is holy. It will not be fully satisfied in this life — but it will be genuinely met.

Today's Prayer

Lord, I want what Moses wanted: more of You. Not more theological information, not more religious experience, but more of Your actual presence, Your actual glory. Show me what You can. I will receive what You give. Amen.
