Gracious and Merciful
"The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love."
— Psalm 145:8
Today's Story
A child once asked his Sunday school teacher: 'If God is all-powerful, why doesn't He just fix everything?' The teacher thought about it and then said: 'What if the way He's fixing everything is by being patient with people like you and me until we turn to Him?' The child was quiet for a moment. 'Oh,' he said. 'So His being slow to anger is actually part of the fixing?' The teacher smiled. 'That's exactly right.' God's patience is not passivity — it is the active, strategic mercy of a Father who will not rush His children into judgment when He can instead bring them home.
Reflection
Psalm 145:8 is one of the most concise and beautiful descriptions of God's character in the entire Bible, drawing from the foundational self-disclosure of God to Moses in Exodus 34:6-7. Gracious (channun) — freely giving without obligation. Compassionate (rachum) — moved with tender care. Slow to anger (erekh appayim) — literally 'long-nosed,' a Hebrew idiom for someone who doesn't breathe hot anger quickly. Rich in love (rab chesed) — overflowing in steadfast covenant faithfulness. This is the God you are dealing with. Not a demanding standard, not a scorekeeper, not a distant power. A God who is constitutionally inclined toward mercy. Let His character shape your expectations — and your behavior toward others.
Today's Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your character is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, rich in love. Let me live from that reality today. And let me extend to others the same character You extend to me. Amen.
