God's Generosity

The Vineyard Workers

"Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?"

— Matthew 20:15

📖

Today's Story

A factory manager known for generosity paid his workers fairly by market standards — but when a long-term employee's family fell into crisis, he quietly gave additional support. A newer employee found out and complained: 'I've worked twice as long and got the same hourly rate.' The manager replied: 'You received what we agreed. Your colleague received what I chose to give. My generosity to him is not injustice to you.' The employee didn't understand at first. Years later, when he himself fell into crisis and the manager helped him beyond what any contract required, he finally understood: grace is not distributed by the ledger.

Reflection

The parable of the vineyard workers upsets every human calculation of fairness. Workers hired at the last hour receive the same wage as those who worked all day. The all-day workers' complaint is understandable by human standards. The owner's response dismantles the complaint with one question: Are you envious because I am generous? The kingdom of God operates on a logic of grace, not of merit. The thief on the cross received the same destination as the apostles who served for decades. This is either scandalous or liberating — depending on whether you see yourself as an all-day worker (who deserves more than grace) or a last-hour worker (who has no claim at all). Most of us are last-hour workers who have forgotten how late we arrived.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I've resented Your generosity to others. I am a last-hour worker who received a full day's wage. Let gratitude replace comparison. Let Your grace be enough. Amen.
