First the Kingdom

First the Kingdom
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
— Matthew 6:33
Today's Story
A businessman named Carl had two goals: build a successful company and practice genuine Christian discipleship. After years of treating them as parallel tracks, he discovered they couldn't remain equal. When his company required decisions that compromised his values, he chose his values and took the financial hit. When his schedule left no room for prayer, Scripture, and genuine relationship, he restructured his schedule first. Slowly his business changed character — it became known for unusual trustworthiness and care for employees. He didn't become less successful; he became successful differently. 'Seeking first the kingdom didn't shrink my business,' he said. 'It changed what the business was for.'
Reflection
Matthew 6:33 comes in the context of Jesus' teaching about anxiety and material provision. The birds and the lilies illustrate God's care for creation; humans are worth more than birds or lilies. But Jesus doesn't say: 'Don't worry about material things because they're not important.' He says: 'Don't worry about material things because your Father knows you need them — and when you seek first His kingdom, He adds these things.' The promise is not that material needs are irrelevant; it is that they are addressed as a consequence of right priority, not as the primary object of pursuit. 'First' is the operative word. Not only. Not never. First. The sequence matters. What would it mean for you to genuinely seek God's kingdom before everything else today?
Today's Prayer
Lord, give me a 'first' that is genuine — not the kingdom tacked onto my agenda but the kingdom as the agenda. Order my priorities around Yours, and trust that everything else will find its right place. Amen.
