Reaching for Jesus

She Touched His Hem

"Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak."

— Matthew 9:20

📖

Today's Story

A prayer counselor described a pattern she had observed: people in genuine crisis often prayed differently from people in comfortable seasons. 'In crisis, they reach,' she said. 'They don't compose beautiful prayers. They grab. The woman with the issue of blood didn't ask permission or compose her petition. She reached.' The counselor had learned to pray more like the desperate woman — a direct, urgent, unembarrassed reach toward Jesus. She found that her most effective prayers were not the most eloquent but the most desperate. 'God is not moved by our eloquence,' she said. 'He is moved by our reach.'

Reflection

The woman with the issue of blood represents everyone who has spent years and resources exhausting every human option. She had 'suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had' (Mark 5:26). She had nothing left but one decision: to reach for Jesus against all obstacles. Her faith was not a carefully articulated theological position. It was a desperate hand extended toward a hem. And it was enough. Jesus stopped, felt power leave Him, and sought her out — not to rebuke her approach but to commend her faith and declare her whole. Whatever you have tried, whatever has failed, whatever has left you depleted — the hem of Jesus' garment is still within reach. Reach.

Today's Prayer

Jesus, I reach for You today — not with perfect faith or eloquent prayer, but with the desperate certainty that if I can just touch Your hem, something will change. I am reaching. Meet my reach. Amen.
