The Holy Spirit's Presence

I Will Not Leave You Orphans

"I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you."

— John 14:18

📖

Today's Story

Orphan imagery appears throughout the stories of people who have encountered the Holy Spirit as Comforter. A young man who had aged out of the foster system without a family described reading John 14:18 and encountering the Holy Spirit in prayer: 'For the first time in my life I felt that Someone was actually coming for me — not waiting for me to earn it or prove myself but coming. Just coming. Jesus said I will come to you. He came.' The theological truth became an experiential reality: the Spirit brought the sense of belonging and presence that the word 'orphan' precisely names the absence of.

Reflection

John 14 is Jesus' farewell discourse — His final extended teaching before the crucifixion. In it He makes one of His most tender promises: I will not leave you as orphans. The Greek word orphanos refers to a child without parents, but also to students whose teacher has left them. The disciples were about to lose the physical presence of the one they had followed for three years. Jesus' promise is that the Spirit would come — not as a substitute for Himself but as His own continuing presence. 'I will come to you' — the Spirit's coming is Jesus' coming in a new form. This is the comfort for every season of feeling abandoned, uncared for, or forgotten: the Spirit was sent specifically to prevent orphan-hood. You have a Father. You have a family. You are not alone.

Today's Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for not leaving us as orphans. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who comes — who is present right now. Let me live today from the reality of that presence, never from the orphan spirit. Amen.
