Rejoice in Hope
"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."
— Romans 12:12
Today's Story
A letter written by Perpetua, a young North African Christian, from prison before her martyrdom in 203 AD describes her experience with unusual serenity. She had a nursing infant, a pagan father weeping for her recantation, and a certain death ahead. She wrote: 'I saw a bronze ladder, narrow and very tall, reaching all the way to the heavens. There was my shepherd, tall and white-haired, surrounded by thousands of white-robed people. And he called to me, and I woke up in joy.' She was twenty-two years old. She died in the arena three days later. The hope she described was not wishful thinking. It was a fixed certainty that held her joyful in the face of the worst the empire could offer.
Reflection
Paul's triad in Romans 12:12 is compact and practical: joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. These three belong together — each sustains the others. Hope produces joy even when circumstances don't justify it. Joy sustains patience in affliction. Patience is maintained through faithful prayer. And faithful prayer renews hope. It is a self-reinforcing cycle that doesn't begin with feelings — it begins with deliberate choice. 'Joyful in hope' doesn't mean 'happy about circumstances'; it means anchored in the certainty of what is coming. The hope here is eschatological — the hope of resurrection, renewal, the glory to come. From that hope, joy is available in every circumstance. Perpetua had it in prison. You can have it today.
Today's Prayer
Lord, let me be joyful in hope — not in circumstances, but in what You've promised. Give me patience for today's affliction and faithfulness in prayer. Let these three things work together in me for Your glory. Amen.
