Fountain of Living Water
"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."
— Jeremiah 2:13
Today's Story
An archaeologist working at ancient sites in the Near East described two kinds of water systems: natural springs, which produce fresh water continuously, and cisterns, which collect and store rainwater. Cisterns were always a backup system — essential in dry seasons, but dependent on what had been collected, prone to cracks, liable to go stale. The spring was always preferable if accessible. God uses this engineering distinction as a spiritual metaphor: He is the spring of living water, constantly producing fresh supply. Whatever else we turn to for spiritual sustenance — achievement, approval, possessions, substances — is a cistern: a limited container that holds collected water, prone to cracking, never as good as the spring.
Reflection
Jeremiah 2:13 describes the double error of Israel's spiritual life: they left the spring and tried to make their own water storage. The problem with the cisterns they dug is not merely that they are inferior but that they are broken — they cannot even hold what they collect. Whatever we build to replace God — our career identity, our relationships, our achievements — is both limited and leaking. This is not a verdict of judgment; it is a diagnosis of our universal tendency. We are drawn toward self-sufficiency, toward managing our own water supply. The spring we left is still flowing. The cisterns we've built are still cracking. Which water are you drinking today?
Today's Prayer
Lord, I return to the spring. Forgive me for the cisterns I've dug and the stale water I've tried to drink from them. You are the living water. I come back to the source. Amen.
