I Am the LORD Who Heals
"For I am the LORD, who heals you."
— Exodus 15:26
Today's Story
Immediately after the Exodus, before the ten commandments, before the detailed law, God gave Israel one test and one self-revelation: at a bitter pool called Marah, He made the waters sweet — and then told them: 'I am the LORD who heals you.' His first major act after liberation was healing — making bitter things sweet, transforming what was toxic into what sustained. A theologian noted that this sequence is deliberate: God reveals Himself as Healer before He gives Himself as Lawgiver. His fundamental nature is remedial — He heals what is broken, sweetens what is bitter, transforms what would kill into what gives life. That is who He is before any other descriptor.
Reflection
Jehovah Rapha — the LORD who heals — is revealed in a context of crisis and of need. The Israelites cannot drink the water and are thirsty. God provides the remedy and then names Himself by the action: I am the One who heals. This name encompasses physical healing (which Israel needed at Marah), emotional healing (the bitterness of their experience), relational healing (the covenant relationship being established), and ultimately spiritual healing (the transformation of sin's damage). God's healing ministry is comprehensive because their needs are comprehensive. Wherever you are damaged — body, heart, mind, spirit, relationship — this is the God you are dealing with: Jehovah Rapha, the One who heals. Bring your Marah to Him today.
Today's Prayer
Jehovah Rapha, I bring my bitter water to You. What is painful, what is toxic, what cannot sustain life — I bring it to the One who heals. Make it sweet. Transform what would kill into what gives life. Amen.
