This Is the Way

This Is the Way
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'"
— Isaiah 30:21
Today's Story
A wilderness guide named Thomas described his practice of leading groups through trackless desert: 'I walk behind the group, not in front. From behind, I can see where everyone is going and course-correct gently. The group doesn't need me to see the whole trail — they need to hear me when they're about to make the wrong turn.' A pastor who heard this description said it was the best sermon illustration for Isaiah 30:21 he had ever encountered. 'The voice behind' is not a threat but a guidance system — from a position that sees the whole picture, correcting in real time. The correction comes before the wrong turn becomes permanent.
Reflection
Isaiah 30:21 is a verse of great practical comfort. It describes a real-time guidance system available to those who belong to God: a voice that speaks directly and specifically when a decision point is reached. 'Whether you turn to the right or to the left' — in either direction, the guidance is available. The voice is 'behind you' — in a position to see what you cannot see, speaking from the perspective of One who knows the full landscape. This doesn't mean every decision comes with explicit divine direction. But the promise stands that God does speak — through Scripture, Spirit, counsel, circumstances — and the attentive ear will hear. Are your ears turned toward that voice today?
Today's Prayer
Lord, let my ears be tuned to Your voice. At every decision point today — left or right — speak. I want to hear 'This is the way' and walk in it. Give me ears to hear. Amen.
