My Help Comes From Above

"My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth."

— Psalm 121:2

📖

Today's Story

Psalm 121 is a psalm of ascent — sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for the festivals. The opening question ('I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from?') is addressed to the pilgrim looking at the hill country through which the road passes, where robbers lurked and danger was real. The answer is immediate and categorical: not from the mountains, not from human guards, not from luck — from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. A traveler who walked the old pilgrimage road to Jerusalem in modern times described feeling the weight of those words: 'Every pilgrim who ever walked this road looked at these same hills and sang this same answer. Across centuries, the answer has not changed.'

Reflection

Psalm 121 is an extraordinary statement of comprehensive divine protection: He will not let your foot slip, He does not slumber or sleep, He watches over you — your going out and your coming in, from this time forth and forevermore. The help described is not occasional divine intervention but constant divine attendance. The Maker of heaven and earth — the One who created the hills the pilgrim fears — is the one providing help. This is the scope of power available to the one who trusts Him. Whatever mountains lie on your road today, whatever dangers lurk in the hill country of your circumstances — your help comes from the One who made those mountains. Look up.

Today's Prayer

Lord, I lift my eyes to You. My help comes from You — not from my own strength, my resources, my cleverness, or my connections. You are the Maker of everything I face. Be my help today. Amen.
