Come Away and Rest

Come Away and Rest
"Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, 'Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'"
— Mark 6:31
Today's Story
The disciples had just returned from their first ministry trip — full of stories about healings, teachings, and spiritual encounters. The crowds were enormous. There was no space to breathe. And Jesus said: come away. Not 'debrief your success.' Not 'plan the next campaign.' Come away. A ministry leader named Rachel kept this verse on her desk for twenty years as her permission slip: 'Jesus took His own disciples away from the crowd when they needed it. I don't need to feel guilty about rest. My Master modeled it.'
Reflection
Jesus' invitation to 'come away and rest' is not a sign of mission failure — it follows immediately after the disciples' successful ministry trip. Rest was not the reward of people who had done nothing; it was the provision for people who had done everything they were supposed to do. Sustainable ministry requires regular retreat. Jesus modeled this throughout His ministry — withdrawing from crowds, rising early to pray alone, taking His closest disciples to quiet places. The Christian life is not a sprint that burns out fast; it is a rhythm of engagement and withdrawal, activity and rest. The invitation to come away stands whenever the crowd and the noise have consumed you. Will you come?
Today's Prayer
Jesus, I accept Your invitation — come away and rest. I lay down the busyness, the noise, the constant going. I come to the quiet place with You. Restore what can only be restored in this kind of coming away. Amen.
