Today's Story

In the ancient Olympics, the winners received a crown of wild olive branches — perishable, temporary, symbolic. Paul contrasts this with the imperishable crown of the Christian life (1 Corinthians 9:25). But the strengthening Paul prays for in Ephesians 3 is different: not the strength for athletic performance but the inner strengthening of the 'inner being' — the deepest self. A counselor who worked with survivors of trauma described this verse as the most relevant in Scripture for her clients: 'The external circumstances may remain brutal. But when the inner person is strengthened, the person can endure, hope, and ultimately flourish regardless of what surrounds them.'

Reflection

Ephesians 3:16 is Paul's prayer for believers — one of the most concentrated prayers in the New Testament. He prays for inner strengthening, 'out of his glorious riches.' The standard of provision is God's own riches — unlimited, inexhaustible. The agent is the Spirit. The location is the 'inner being' — the core of personhood, the place that circumstances cannot reach directly. This inner strengthening is not a substitute for outward help but its foundation: a person with a strengthened inner being can navigate outward adversity with resources that adversity cannot touch. What would it mean for your inner being to be strengthened today — not your circumstances improved, but your core self made capable of whatever your circumstances require?

Today's Prayer

Father, out of Your glorious riches, strengthen me in my inner being. Not just outward change — inward fortification. Let Your Spirit work in the deepest part of me, making me capable of whatever this day requires. Amen.
