Preparation of Heart

A Voice in the Desert

"And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation."

— Luke 1:76-77

Today's Story

The birth of John the Baptist — whom Luke places on June 24 in the liturgical calendar — is the beginning of the Advent of Christ. Six months before the manger, there was a barren woman and an aged priest and a miraculous pregnancy. Zechariah's prophecy over his newborn son is one of the great prophetic songs of Scripture: this child would be the one who prepared the way. John's entire ministry could be summarized in one word: prepare. He came not to build his own kingdom but to make room for another. His was the greatest supporting role in human history — and he fulfilled it with complete intentionality. 'He must increase, but I must decrease.'

Reflection

John the Baptist's calling to 'prepare the way' is an invitation extended to every generation: to make room in our lives and in our hearts for the coming of Jesus. Preparation is active: clearing what obstructs, leveling what is elevated by pride, lifting what has been lowered by despair. The 'knowledge of salvation' that John was to give his people was not primarily information about heaven — it was the personal, relational knowing of the Savior Himself. Preparation is not a one-time religious moment; it is the ongoing posture of the heart that clears space for Christ to work. What in your life needs to decrease so that He can increase?

🙏

Today's Prayer

Lord, like John, let me decrease so You can increase. Where my own agenda has taken up space that belongs to You, let me clear it. I prepare the way in my own heart. Come. Amen.
