The Rock That Followed Them
"And that rock was Christ."
— 1 Corinthians 10:4
Today's Story
Paul's comment that the water-giving rock in the wilderness 'was Christ' is a startling claim that Christ's presence was not confined to the Incarnation but extended back through Israel's history. A Jewish-Christian scholar described the implications: 'Paul is saying that the One who followed them in the desert, who gave water from the rock, who sustained them in the wilderness — that was Jesus, in pre-incarnate form. The same provision. The same Presence. The same care.' He shook his head: 'Salvation has always been by grace through faith in Him. Moses was not saved by the law. He was saved by the same grace we are. The rock followed them.'
Reflection
1 Corinthians 10:4 is one of the most theologically dense sentences in Paul's letters. He reads Israel's wilderness experience as an extended allegory of the Christian life — baptism in the Red Sea, spiritual food and drink in the wilderness, and the rock that gave water identified explicitly with Christ. What is remarkable is the phrase 'that rock followed them' — a reference to a rabbinic tradition that the rock physically followed the Israelites through the wilderness. Paul takes this tradition and reinterprets it: Christ is the rock, and Christ follows His people. Wherever they went, He was there — not as a fixed location to be sought but as a presence that accompanied them. The same is true for us. Christ follows us into every circumstance. The provision is present wherever we go.
Today's Prayer
Lord, You are the rock that follows — not a fixed landmark I have to travel to, but a presence that travels with me. Wherever today takes me, You are already there. Thank You for following me. Amen.
