Freedom Through Truth

The Truth Will Set You Free

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

— John 8:32

📖

Today's Story

A recovering alcoholic named Tom described the first step of his recovery as the most frightening and the most liberating thing he had ever done: saying the true words aloud. 'My name is Tom and I am an alcoholic.' He had spent years managing the truth, hiding it, reframing it. The moment of speaking it — the first truly honest sentence he had said in years — was the beginning of freedom. He said: 'Jesus said the truth sets you free. I had been trying to find freedom through managing the truth, which is the exact opposite. The path to freedom goes through the truth, not around it.' He had been sober for eleven years when he told this story.

Reflection

Jesus makes this statement to people who already consider themselves free — they are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves (verse 33). His point is that the slavery He is describing is not political but spiritual — slavery to sin (verse 34). The truth that sets free is not merely accurate information; it is the personal knowledge of Jesus Himself, who says just three chapters later: 'I am the way and the truth and the life' (John 14:6). To know the truth is to know Jesus. And knowing Jesus — His character, His completed work, His ongoing intercession — is what sets the slave to sin free from the inside out. No external freedom is as complete as the freedom that comes from knowing the truth about who Jesus is and what He has done.

Today's Prayer

Jesus, let me know You as Truth — and let that knowing set me free from every false narrative I've been living by. Where I have chosen comfortable lies over freeing truth, give me the courage to choose the truth that liberates. Amen.
