Releasing Anxiety to God

Cast Your Cares

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

— 1 Peter 5:7

📖

Today's Story

A professor of pastoral counseling opened every semester with the same exercise: students wrote their biggest anxiety on a piece of paper, crumpled it, and physically threw it across the room. 'This is what Peter means by cast,' he said. 'Not gently place. Not set down carefully. Cast — throw it. With force. With intention. With the full awareness that once you throw it, it's gone from your hands.' He added: 'The reason you can throw it is the second half of the verse: because He cares for you. The throw only makes sense if you believe someone cares enough to catch it.' He did this exercise in class and in his own prayer life every morning.

Reflection

The Greek word translated 'cast' (epiripto) means to throw upon — the same word used when the disciples threw their cloaks on the donkey for Jesus to ride (Luke 19:35). It implies a decisive, intentional transfer. Anxiety is not released by thinking less about it; it is released by deliberately transferring it to God. The motivation Peter gives is both simple and profound: 'because he cares for you.' The word for 'cares' (melei) means it matters to him, it is his concern. Your specific worry is God's specific concern. This is not generic divine interest; it is personal investment. The God who cares about you is large enough to receive what you throw and reliable enough not to drop it. Throw it today.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Lord, I throw my anxieties at You today — all of them, with force and intention. I don't just set them down carefully — I cast them. Receive what I throw. I trust that You care enough to catch what I release. Amen.
