Called by His Grace
"Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth."
— 1 Corinthians 1:26
Today's Story
The early church at Corinth was a diverse and largely undistinguished group — merchants, freedmen, household servants, a few wealthier patrons. No philosophers, no senators, no generals. Paul's catalog of who was called — not many wise, not many influential, not many noble — is a description of most local churches throughout history. But the same passage explains the logic: 'God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong' (verse 27). The unremarkable nature of the called is the point, not the exception. God's power is displayed most clearly through people who leave no room for alternative explanations.
Reflection
The calling of God bypasses the categories the world uses to determine significance. The world selects by wisdom, influence, and lineage; God selects to confound all three. Paul's reasoning is explicitly anti-boasting: 'so that no one may boast before him' (verse 29). When God uses the foolish, the weak, and the lowly, the glory cannot be redirected to human capacity. The calling itself becomes a testimony. If you have ever felt overlooked, unqualified, or too ordinary for God to use — 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 is written for you. Your ordinariness is not an obstacle to God's purpose; it is precisely the material He chooses to work with most powerfully.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I accept the calling You've given to an ordinary person. I don't need to be impressive first. Use my weakness and my ordinariness to display Your strength and Your glory. Let no one boast except in You. Amen.
