Strength for Today
"The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze, and your strength will equal your days."
— Deuteronomy 33:25
Today's Story
Moses' final blessing over the tribe of Asher contains this promise: 'your strength will equal your days.' A missionary in a demanding field kept this verse on the inside cover of her journal. Each day began with the same truth: the strength needed for today will be provided today. 'I cannot store it up,' she wrote. 'Yesterday's strength doesn't carry into today. But today's strength arrives with today. I've never run out of it.' She served for thirty-four years in difficult conditions. The strength for each day was equal to each day — not surplus, not deficit, but exactly sufficient.
Reflection
Deuteronomy 33:25 contains what is sometimes called the 'daily manna' principle: provision scaled to need, day by day. As the manna in the wilderness was given fresh daily and could not be stored, God's strength is renewed each morning in proportion to what the day requires. 'Your strength will equal your days' — not exceed (so there's no room for self-sufficiency) and not fall short (so there's no reason for despair). The days ahead may look daunting from here. But you are not being given strength for all of them now. You are being given strength for today. And tomorrow's strength will arrive with tomorrow. Live from today's supply.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I take today's provision for today. I don't ask for tomorrow's strength — just today's. And I trust that what You give will be exactly equal to what today requires. Amen.
