Jesus Knows You Personally

Mary Called by Name

"Jesus said to her, 'Mary.' She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, 'Rabboni!' (which means 'Teacher')."

— John 20:16

Today's Story

Mary Magdalene stood weeping at an empty tomb, convinced the body of Jesus had been stolen. She turned and saw the gardener. She asked about the body. And then — one word. Her name. 'Mary.' She turned again, and everything changed. The resurrection was announced not in a public proclamation or a heavenly announcement but in one person's name, spoken by one Person who knew her. She had been delivered from seven demons (Luke 8:2). She had followed Jesus across Galilee. She had stood at the cross when others fled. And the risen Lord chose to announce Himself first to her, with one word: her name.

Reflection

John 20:16 is the most personal resurrection appearance in the Gospels. The risen Lord is recognized not by sight — Mary had looked at Him and not recognized Him. He was recognized by His voice saying her name. This is the fulfillment of John 10:3: 'He calls his own sheep by name.' The first word spoken by the risen Christ to a human being was a name. Not a proclamation, not a doctrine, not a command. A name. This speaks to the personal, individual nature of the resurrection relationship: Jesus rose for the world, and He announces Himself to one specific person, in her specific grief, with her specific name. He knows yours too.

Today's Prayer

Jesus, call my name today — the way You called Mary's. Let me hear You speaking personally to me, not just generally. I want to turn toward You with the same recognition: Rabboni. Teacher. Lord. Amen.
