The Midnight Request

A pastor described a season of praying for a church member who seemed beyond reach — addicted, resistant, seemingly choosing destruction. The parable of the friend at midnight in Luke 11 is specifically about the quality of persistence in prayer that Jesus describes as 'shameless audacity' (anaideia). The friend keeps knocking past the point of propriety, past the reasonable hour, past the expected giving-up point. Jesus commends this quality — not because God is reluctant like the man in bed, but because the posture of shameless persistence expresses a confident trust that the relationship can bear the asking.
