Perfect Peace
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
— Isaiah 26:3
Today's Story
Hannah Whitall Smith, the nineteenth-century author of The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life, described the 'perfect peace' of Isaiah 26:3 as her life's discovery: 'I had expected religion to give me comfort in trials. I did not expect it to give me peace about trials. There is a difference. Comfort is given to the distressed. Peace is given to those whose mind is stayed. I stopped being distressed and started being stayed.' She spent decades helping other believers discover the same transition — from seeking comfort in difficulty to dwelling in the peace that transcends it.
Reflection
Isaiah 26:3 contains a Hebrew phrase (shalem shalem — double peace, 'perfect peace') that appears only here in the entire Old Testament. The doubling intensifies: not ordinary peace but complete, whole, undivided peace. The condition is a 'steadfast mind' — the Hebrew 'stayed' (samuk) means leaning against, supported by, as one leans against a wall. The mind is leaning into God, supported by trust. This is not a passive mental state but an active, deliberate orientation. You choose where your mind leans. And God's promise is calibrated to the lean: wherever you lean into Him, perfect peace is there. The anxiety comes not from the circumstances but from where your mind is leaning. What is your mind leaning on today?
Today's Prayer
Lord, I lean my mind onto You today. I choose to stay my thoughts in You, not in the circumstances that want to consume them. Give me the double peace reserved for the steadfast mind. Amen.
