The Way, the Truth, the Life
"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"
— John 14:6
Today's Story
Blaise Pascal wrote: 'There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.' This framing helps understand John 14:6: the reason Jesus is the only way to the Father is not arbitrary exclusivity — it is the nature of what was broken and what was required to fix it. A doctor who is the only one with the antidote to a specific poison is not exclusivist; he is necessary. Jesus' claim is not 'I am your best option'; it is 'I am what the situation requires and I am the only One who can provide it.'
Reflection
John 14:6 is the seventh and final 'I am' statement in the Gospel of John. Way, truth, and life are not three different things but three dimensions of one reality. The way: He is not pointing toward a direction; He is the path itself. The truth: not abstract proposition but the living embodiment of reality as God defines it. The life: not merely animate existence but the zoe (divine, eternal life) that only God possesses and can give. 'No one comes to the Father except through me' — this is exclusive, but it is exclusive in the way that love is exclusive: a Father's child comes home through their family, not through any door. Jesus is the door that corresponds to the Father (John 10:9). He is how the family comes home.
Today's Prayer
Jesus, You are my way — I stop trying to find another path. You are my truth — I stop managing the truth to suit myself. You are my life — I stop looking for life in things that cannot give it. You are enough. Amen.
