A New Name
"To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it."
— Revelation 2:17
Today's Story
Names in the Bible mark identity transformations: Abram becomes Abraham, Jacob becomes Israel, Simon becomes Peter, Saul becomes Paul. Each renaming is a statement about new nature, new purpose, new identity. The 'new name' of Revelation 2:17 is the ultimate in this pattern — a name known only between the individual and God, the final, complete expression of personal identity as God has fashioned it. A theologian wrote: 'Your new name is what God has been calling you all along, the truth of who you are that no one else has fully seen. The white stone is the declaration that your story, as God has written it, is good.'
Reflection
The white stone with a new name is one of the most personal promises in the book of Revelation — which is primarily concerned with cosmic events. In the midst of the cosmic story, God addresses each individual with a name known only to them and to Him. This promise is for 'the one who is victorious' — the one who has endured, persevered, and remained faithful through the pressures described in the letters to the seven churches. The new name suggests a final, complete self-knowledge — knowing yourself as God knows you, seen truly, named truly. Every identity wound you've sustained, every false name you've been called, every mislabeling of your character — the new name supersedes all of it. It is coming.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I look forward to the new name — the truest description of who You have made me. Until then, let me live from what You call me rather than what the world labels me. Amen.
