Spring of Water Within

Spring of Water Within

"But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

— John 4:14

📖

Today's Story

In the Negev desert, ancient cisterns were dug to collect winter rainwater. But the greatest prize was a maayan — a spring. A spring didn't need rain to produce water; it drew from deeper underground sources. In a dry land, the difference between a cistern and a spring was the difference between uncertainty and reliable supply. Jesus offers not a cistern — a collected, stored, finite supply that requires constant refilling from external sources. He offers to place a spring inside the person who comes to Him. The source is eternal. The supply is inexhaustible. It flows from within.

Reflection

Jesus' promise to the Samaritan woman is one of the most radical transformations of water-supply metaphors in Scripture. The water He gives becomes 'a spring of water welling up to eternal life' inside the recipient. This is the work of the Holy Spirit — not a reservoir of accumulated spiritual experience but a living spring, continuously active, always available, drawing from the inexhaustible depth of God Himself. The person who has received this spring does not need to return to external sources for every need. The source is internal, given, already there. The spiritual dehydration that drives people back to inadequate wells repeatedly is the sign of a spring not yet discovered or not yet trusted.

🙏

Today's Prayer

Jesus, let the spring You've placed within me flow freely today. I stop running to external wells and receive the internal spring. Let it well up, overflow, and reach others who are thirsty. Amen.
