Restore to Me the Joy

Restore to Me the Joy
"Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me."
— Psalm 51:12
Today's Story
Psalm 51 is David's prayer after Nathan the prophet confronted him about his sin with Bathsheba. He had committed adultery and murder. He had covered it up for months. And when the truth came, his prayer was not primarily for the external consequences to be removed — it was for the restoration of something internal: the joy of salvation. He had not lost his salvation. He had lost the joy of it. The difference is important: some sins don't remove us from God's family but they do remove us from God's joy. The restoration David sought was the restoration of the living experience of being forgiven and beloved.
Reflection
Psalm 51:12 is the turning point of the psalm — the movement from confession to consecration. After the deep acknowledgment of sin (verses 1-9), after the prayer for inner renewal (verse 10), David asks for two things: the joy of salvation and a willing spirit. The joy was not of his own manufacture; it was received from God and required a prayer of restoration when lost. The 'willing spirit' — the Hebrew nedib means spontaneous, generous, volunteer — is the spirit that obeys not from compulsion but from delight. David wanted to be the kind of person who wanted to obey. This is the deepest prayer of the sanctified life: not just right behavior but the joy and willingness that makes it not just right but good.
Today's Prayer
Lord, restore to me the joy of Your salvation — not just the fact of it but the felt reality of it. And grant me a willing spirit: obedience that comes from love, not obligation. Amen.
