Every Nation and Tongue
August 18
Every Nation and Tongue
"After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb."
— Revelation 7:9
Today's Story
When Revelation 7:9 is taken seriously as a vision of what is coming, it transforms how we see the global church now. An Indonesian church leader described attending a gathering of Christians from sixty nations: 'I thought I understood the body of Christ. Then I heard worship in Swahili, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Arabic in the same hour. I wept. I thought: this is what John saw. This is what is coming. And it has already begun.' The diversity of the global church is not a problem to be managed; it is the beginning of the fulfillment of the vision of the throne.
Reflection
Revelation 7:9 presents the final picture of the redeemed: uncountable, from every ethnos and laos and glossa and phule — every nation, tribe, people, language. This vision is simultaneously eschatological (pointing to the end) and descriptive (describing what God is already doing). The mission of the church is not incidental to this vision; it is the means by which it will be fulfilled. Every person from every people group standing before the throne is the result of someone going, praying, translating, serving. The great crowd is being gathered. You are part of the gathering. Whatever your role in the global mission, it contributes to the scene John saw.
Today's Prayer
Lord, let me keep my eyes on the throne vision — every nation, tribe, people, and language worshiping together. Let this vision motivate my generosity, my prayer, and my participation in the gathering of all peoples. Amen.
