Divine Restoration

He Restores My Soul

"He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake."

— Psalm 23:3

📖

Today's Story

A spiritual director named Helen spent thirty years helping burned-out clergy. The pattern was consistent: people who had been pouring out for years without being poured into, who had been pastoring others' souls while neglecting their own. Her prescription was always the same: return to the Shepherd. 'The soul does not restore itself,' she said. 'The soul is restored by the Shepherd. Your job is to bring your soul to Him and let Him do what only He can do.' She described soul restoration as requiring the same things a burned field requires: time, water, and the absence of further burning. 'You can't restore a field by planting more crops. You have to let it lie fallow before the Shepherd.'

Reflection

Psalm 23:3's 'he refreshes my soul' is literally 'he restores my nephesh' — my living self, my life-breath. The same word used in Genesis 2:7 when God breathed life into Adam. What God breathed into humanity at creation, He can renew when it has been depleted. The restoration is His work, not ours. We do not restore ourselves by trying harder, taking a better vacation, or pursuing wellness strategies alone. We are restored by the Shepherd — by returning to the green pastures and quiet waters where He makes His restoring presence available. The word 'refreshes' (shuv) is also the word for repentance — a turning, a returning to the right orientation. Soul restoration often begins with a return.

Today's Prayer

Shepherd, restore my soul. What has been depleted, renew. What has gone dry, refresh. What has lost its way, guide back to the right paths. I bring my soul to You for the restoration only You can give. Amen.
