Shine as Stars

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden."

— Matthew 5:14

📖

Today's Story

An astronomer described why stars are visible from such extreme distances: 'A star's light travels because the source is real and the environment is dark. You can't see stars in daylight not because the stars have gone out, but because there's too much competing light. In genuine darkness, even a small star is unmistakable.' He had no particular theology in mind. But a Christian friend who heard the description immediately thought of Matthew 5:14-16. The visibility of Christian witness is not dependent on the size of the light source — it is dependent on the darkness of the environment. In deep darkness, even small lights are highly visible.

Reflection

Jesus declares His followers to be light — not bearers of light, not contributors to light, but light itself. The declaration is indicative, not imperative: 'You are the light.' The imperative follows: 'Let your light shine before others' (verse 16). We don't create the light; we don't hide the light we've been given. The light is not primarily a dramatic witness strategy; it is the natural visibility of a life that belongs to a different source. 'That they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven' — the goal of the light is not personal recognition but the direction of attention toward God. Your visible life is meant to make God visible. What in your life makes God more visible today?

Today's Prayer

Lord, let my light shine today — not for my glory but for yours. Let people see the good that flows from belonging to You and find their way to the Father. Amen.
