Love Conquering Fear

Perfect Love Drives Out Fear

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

— 1 John 4:18

📖

Today's Story

A child who had been abused at home described his experience of God at a youth camp: 'Every adult I had ever known used love as a threat — I'll stop loving you if you don't behave. When the counselor told me God's love was different, I didn't believe her. But she kept showing it. Patient, consistent, no conditions. One night I woke up and something had changed. The fear was gone. Not gone like I had conquered it. Gone like it had been driven out by something larger.' He described it as the first experience in his life of love without threat. 'Perfect love drives out fear,' he said. 'I experienced that. It is absolutely real.'

Reflection

1 John 4:18 diagnoses the root of spiritual fear: it has 'to do with punishment.' Fear in relationships — including our relationship with God — flows from anticipating rejection or penalty for inadequacy. John's remedy is not willpower to overcome fear but the experience of perfect love that actively displaces it. The Greek word ekballo (drives out) means to throw out, to expel — the same word used for Jesus casting out demons. Perfect love doesn't coexist with fear; it expels it. Growing in the love of God — receiving it, understanding it, living within it — is the only genuine cure for spiritual fear. You cannot fear punishment and be fully at home in God's love simultaneously.

Today's Prayer

Lord, let Your perfect love drive out my fear — cast it out the way you cast out demons. Every fear of rejection, of punishment, of inadequacy — let love be larger. Let me be made perfect in love. Amen.
