Let Me Dwell in Your House

"Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them."

— Exodus 25:8

📖

Today's Story

The tabernacle in the wilderness was an extraordinary theological statement: the God who had just revealed Himself as Creator, Redeemer, and Lawgiver wanted a house — not in heaven but among His people. He gave precise, detailed instructions for the construction: the type of wood, the specific metals, the exact measurements. As if to say: this matters. I want to be here, in the middle of the camp, among the tents of ordinary people. The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary that traveled with Israel — visible evidence of divine dwelling in the midst of a pilgrim people.

Reflection

Exodus 25:8's divine motivation — 'and I will dwell among them' — is the driving force behind the entire tabernacle project. God is not asking Israel to build Him a monument at a distance; He is asking them to create the conditions for proximity. The Hebrew shakan (dwell) describes continuous, settled presence — not a visit but a residence. The New Testament's great declaration — 'The Word became flesh and dwelt among us' (John 1:14) — uses the same imagery: Jesus 'tabernacled' among us. And Revelation's final promise — 'Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them' (21:3) — is the ultimate fulfillment. The entire arc of Scripture is the story of God moving closer. He wants to dwell.

Today's Prayer

Lord, You want to dwell among Your people — and You want to dwell in me. I make space for You today. Let Your presence fill the sanctuary of my heart. Come and dwell. Amen.
